From 1 April 2024, the government intended to fine boiler manufacturers that didn’t meet targets for installing heat pumps. This scheme is called the Clean Heat Market Mechanism. As a result of this, some manufacturers increased their boiler prices from 1 January 2024 – this has been described as a “boiler-tax”. On 14 March, the government announced a delay to the scheme until 1 April 2025. Consumers who purchased a boiler between 1 January and the end of March may have paid more than they otherwise would have as a boiler-tax might have been added to the total price of the installation job. The installer should get a refund for this amount and then pass the refund on to the consumer.
